The smooth, soft skin beneath your fingers
The gurgle she makes as your fingers tickle
One day they'll walk,
One day, they’ll make baby steps
Leaving you backI cannot say goodbye I cannot leave you But you are not mine I regretfully pull my threaded fingers free I place you on the door step The letter tucked under the blankets with you One last stroke to your soft dimpled cheek One last hold of your cold hand I turn and leave I will see you againLeaving you back

Sunlight trickles in, prying her eyelids open. "It's morning, Lilly."
"Wake up, you worthless child," cries the sun.
"Wake up, Sweetie," her mother utters softly. "Wake up and see how beautiful the world is." Once upon a time, perhaps, but not anymore.
Once upon a time, a lot of things.
Like once upon a time, she had a warm bed, and her mother
