I cannot say goodbye
I cannot leave you
But you are not mine
I regretfully pull my threaded fingers free
I place you on the door step
The letter tucked under the blankets with you
One last stroke to your soft dimpled cheek
One last hold of your cold hand
I turn and leave
I will see you again
